Fall Gathering 2016

The Annual AMC Fall Gathering is hosted by each AMC chapter in rotation. Our previous turn was in 2006 and now it our responsibility again in 2016. The chapter organizational timeline is being followed for the event planning. The chapter still needs volunteers for not only leading events, but for the not so obvious tasks as parking monitors on arrival day. If you can volunteer, contact Jerry Bernardini who is keeping track of volunteers, or our Fall Gathering Chair John Halloran.
Trip leaders and co-leaders for all events are still needed. Trips (aka outings) seen on the registration page are not final and may be altered when the biking, hiking and paddling trips are firmed up. See the latest "in progress" draft listings. Registration will close as soon as our limit of 150 participants is reached. View our Registration page for full information on schedules, costs and trips.

The 2016 AMC Fall Gathering committee has the following volunteers.

Planning Committee Chairperson - John Halloran

Hospitality Sub-Committee - Margie Parsons, Elise Hedglen, Herrick Spencer

Outstanding Volunteer

In May Jennie Crooks was named Outstanding Volunteer for 2016 by the Rhode Island Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Jennie for several years has been helping with building water bars, blazing, and brushing. She also helped installing fencing for the piping plovers. The Nature Conservancy noted that Jennie is “a valuable part of The Conservancy’s trails team” and that “Jennie’s experience with trail maintenance has helped The Conservancy keep their trails in tip top shape.” Thank you, Jennie, for your contributions to trail maintenance in Rhode Island. - Dav Cranmer

Wood River Bridge Project, July-Aug, 2015

The Chapter was awarded a $100,000 Recreational Trails Program grant in 2013 to construct a bridge over the Wood River on the Mt. Tom Trail. The purpose of the bridge is to eliminate the need to walk on Rt 165 in order to cross the river. Over the following 1 1/2 years, an engineering firm was contracted to obtain necessary data needed to apply for a wetlands permit which was finally issued in October 2014. A fiberglass truss bridge was selected and an engineering firm was contracted to design the concrete abutments. The abutments were installed by a contractor in May 2015. The bridge was ordered and it was delivered unassembled on July 11, 2015. Assembly was done in the east parking area over the next 12 days by many volunteers and was lifted into place by a crane contractor on July 23, 2015.

ADA compliant access ramps of our own design were built over the next 6 weeks, again by many volunteers. Oak trim and ADA compliant handrails were added to finish the project on August 29, 2015. The Trails Committee is grateful to the many volunteers, including members of the Narragansett Chapter of Trout Unlimited, who contributed a total of nearly 1100 hours to this project allowing the project to be completed in a timely manner. The bridge has a span of 65 feet with an additional 65 feet of access ramps.
