From the Chair

I recently heard a Japanese writer refer to the experience of taking a hike in the woods as a “forest shower”. The three sections of Rhode Island’s terrific North South Trail I just completed meant I spent several hours in the woods each hike, and I agree with the Japanese writer. There is nothing more refreshing and reinvigorating than spending a morning or a day in the woods. Our Chapter certainly offers lots of opportunities for participants to enjoy their own “forest shower”. We have a superb cadre of local hikes volunteers who lead a variety of hikes for participants with all different levels of skill and interests, through our beautiful Rhode Island woods. The schedule of activities for the next few months is very impressive!

Our volunteer local hikes leaders are overseen by Herrick Spencer, the Sub-Chair of the Local Hikes Committee. He has enthusiastically overseen this committee for several years, and is rightfully proud of all that he and his committee and volunteer leaders have offered to members and the general public. But Herrick now would like to turn the reins over to “new blood, to give someone else a chance to learn the role of the Local Hikes Committee Sub-Chair.” Please contact Herrick Spencer or Chris Shafer if you would like to serve the Chapter in the Sub Chair Local Hikes Committee position. You will work alongside Herrick for a few months. The duties are listed on the Narragansett Chapter website under volunteer support/chapter bylaws. Please contact Herrick, or me at bonniedune@aol.com for more information.

Congratulations and a hearty welcome to Ed Poyer, Northern Hikes Committee Chair, who was recently voted into the Leadership Development Committee Chair position by your Chapter’s Executive Committee. Ed has served in the LDC Chair position before so he will easily move into the role. Ed’s first task will be to form his Committee – please consider volunteering to sit on the LDC Committee alongside Ed and Activities Chair Chris Shafer. Ed has a lot of great ideas for trainings and education that will enhance the skills of our current and new leaders, and of activity participants.

A warm thank you to Mark Dennen, our current Communications Chair. Although Mark will move out of the Communications Chair role in November, he has volunteered to stay on as Newsletter Editor, one of the key components of the Communications Chair position. Mark will also assist the new Communications Chair to learn their role. The Communications Chair position will also be assisted by a photographer, editor and webmaster. Please contact Mark directly to express your interest. And thank you! As you can see, volunteer opportunities abound in our Chapter. Please step forward, help keep our Chapter strong. Check out other volunteer opportunities on our website . See you in the outdoors!

Ice, snow, rain, thunder, sun – and a great family adventure!

Last month we let you know that kids under 12 could stay at the AMC’s Highland Center in Bretton Woods, NH for as little as $33 a night with breakfast and dinner. During school vacation in April, one member did just that with his 7 and 9 year old daughters.

One day one a cold front brought wind, freezing rain, and 50 mph gusts. The entire south side of the Highland Center was sheeted in ice. The girls were less than thrilled about going out but they were game for a hike up Mt. Willard (2.5mi round trip - 900’ elevation gain). Within 20 minutes thunder rolled in and there was a race back to shelter at the trail head. After 15 minutes of thunder, lightning, rain, hail, wind, and a few power bars the soggy crew crossed the clearing back to the Highland Center where the girls excitedly told anyone who would listen about their adventure.

After lunch, they tried again and nearly summitted. With ¼ mile to go it was too late to continue. The girls understood and surprisingly didn’t complain. They returned to the Highland Center for dinner, stories, and a feeling of pride. For the accomplishment, each girl was presented with a Crawford Notch pin which they quickly displayed on their packs.

The next day the group checked out and headed home via Franconia Notch where had been told about the kid-friendly hike in to Lonesome Lake Hut (3 miles round trip 900’ elevation gain). Snow fell off and on during the 2 hour hike and it was a delight to see a snow covered stuffed puppy’s head sticking out the side of a child’s backpack.

At the hut, hot cocoa and sandwiches were enjoyed. The girls’ bodies were tired but their eyes were bright as they took pride in another accomplishment. In recognition, each girl received with a Lonesome Lake Hut pin which they quickly added to their packs. Upon returning to the car, rather than falling asleep as expected, the girls carried on an incredibly animated conversation for over an hour fed by the excitement of their accomplishment.

In two fun and inexpensive days these girls got exercise, gained confidence, and created positive memories. They are already asking when they can do it again. It doesn’t take much for a child to enjoy the outdoors. Get outside with your family today.
