When using a aluminum climbing carabiner, you must file off the hook
on the end. Normally this hook improves the strength of the
carabiner, but in this case it is a potential problem unhooking
a rope from a deck line or other tow point. So file the
hook down to prevent it from catching. If using the rope in saltwater,
I soak the carabiners in fresh water to remove any salt in the joints after
the paddle. This prevents the aluminum from corroding and locking up the
spring hinge. Occasionally I put a drop of thin oil in each hinge point.
