The Gansett
Gazette No Password Needed for Gazette on Chapter Website As many of you know, the Executive Board has recently been considering eliminating the password requirement for the Gansett Gazette that appears on the chapter website and conducted a member survey on that question. 70% of those responding to the survey favored eliminating the need for the password to view the Gazette. Based on the survey results and on much discussion, the Executive Board, at its May meeting, voted in favor of eliminating the password for the Gazette on the chapter website. This change is effective with this, the August/September issue of the Gazette, which should be up on our chapter website by the time you have received this copy in the mail. It is hoped by the Executive Board that making this change will make the Gazette more readily available to members and also serve as an incentive for non-members to join, who will now be able to see, in more detail, the types of activities our chapter does. In addition to the Gazette, there is a wealth of information about our chapter and the AMC on our chapter website, including photos of many trips, and everyone is encouraged to visit it and browse around. The address for our chapter website is www.amcnarragansett.org REQUEST FOR THE APPIE OF THE YEAR NOMINATION Every year at the Annual Meeting and Dinner an individual is awarded with the Chapter’s highest honor, Appie of the Year. This award is presented annually to that person who, in an outstanding manner, exemplifies the mission of the Appalachian Mountain Club. The recipient of this award receives an engraved plaque as a permanent memento. The Appie of the Year is also presented with a plaque with his name engraved along with the names of the previous Appies. The plaque is retained for one year before it is passed on to the next Appie of the Year. The recipient of this award is chosen by the Narragansett Chapter membership and the Chapter Executive Board. Please send your Appie of the Year nominations to Jerry Bernardini, 1896 Middle Rd, East Greenwich, RI 02818 or e-mail, jbern9@cox.net , by September 23, 2006. Attention New Leaders and Aspiring Leaders The Narragansett Chapter Leadership Development Committee is once again planning a workshop to instruct new and potential leaders in the basic skills needed to successfully lead chapter activities. This one-day workshop will include sessions on Activity Design and Planning, Leadership Styles, Decision Making, Managing Your Group, and Accident Scene Management, as well as Screening Participants, Trip Logistics and Trailhead Procedures. The skills presented will apply to all chapter activities, and will be a benefit to anyone planning to lead a one day activity, a weekend trip, or maybe something more ambitious. The format for this workshop has been modified from prior workshops. We will split into small groups to make the day highly interactive, giving you the opportunity to benefit directly from the experiences and knowledge of the experienced chapter leaders who will be leading these sessions. If you are a new leader or are interested in becoming a leader, this workshop will give you the skills and confidence you need to lead any chapter activity. The workshop is scheduled for November 18, and will be held at Camp Hoffman in South Kingstown. Cost for chapter members is $25.00, and includes lunch, snacks and materials. For further information or to sign up for this workshop, contact Charlie Killam (508) 252-4349 or email charliek@bufftree.com.
