Memorial Hike for Lou Jacobs
For those who are unaware, chapter member Lou Jacobs passed away suddenly on Sunday April 29th. Lou was a longtime and very active member and most recently served our chapter as the Local Hikes Subchair. Lou led many hikes for our chapter and was planning on leading a hike on June 10th. New leaders have stepped forward to lead this hike and it is being dedicated to Lou's memory. Please see the write-up in this Gazette for the details on the hike on June 10th and it is hoped that many members will attend in honor of Lou.

AMC Earth Day in the Parks
AMC Members and friends spruced up three parks during the Earth Day period. Chris Shafer, Henry Cruciani, and Susan Jones lead an AMC-REI team of 30 in building board walks and removing debris in Barrington’s Veterans Memorial Park. Barbara Flagg and I headed a productive group, a mix of AMC and Roger William U. international members, who restored the appearance of a section of Colt State Park. Their work was commended by the Providence Journal in a story featuring Barbara’s comments. On Earth Day, 10 AMC members, a squad from Bryant University and a neighborhood group installed log stairs and water bars at Neutaconkanut Hill Park under the tutelage of Chris Shafer. The work will reduce erosion of a scenic trail, a step in the restoration of the large but neglected park in one of the highest areas of Providence. Participants enjoyed good weather, interesting work, new friendships and the satisfaction of improving recreational open space. National Trails Day, Saturday, June 2, will provide additional opportunities for members to enjoy the experience (no two trails are the same) of working as a team to upgrade trails. Contact Maria Earley at 789-8331 for details.

Watch out for Ticks!
June/ July are peak months for tick activity. While a mosquito and other insect’s bites or stings that creates mild discomfort, a tick bores into your skin and stays there. A deer tick, if infected, the inflection will spread through the your blood stream and attack the sheath on your nerves creating painful joints (especially knees) significant loss of energy, fever, chills until treated with antibiotics. Can ticks “get you”? Yes. There are lots of them in RI and New England. I was bitten last summer and was unable to engage in outdoor activities for several weeks. In discussion, I found that a number of AMC hikers have had similar unfortunate encounters, sometimes requiring IV therapy and extended periods of recuperation.
Three steps for avoiding Tick infection:
Prevention: Avoid marshy areas, high grass, brush and woody shrubs, wear long pants tucked in sock and long sleeve shirt, spread deet on exposed skin, spray permethin bug spray on your cloths.
Examination: After your hike, check carefully for ticks, the most dangerous is the tiny nymphs, smaller than the size of a match head or tiny freckle. Since you may miss it, check the next few days’ signs of red spot with a tick in the center.
Treatment: If you see the red spot or feel the symptoms for a few days but find no spot, see an MD ASAP. Two or three days of taking the pills normally wipe out most if not all of the symptoms. The standard treatment requires you to take the pills for 30 days.
