The Gansett Gazette June-July 2009
From the Chair
Although the Club does have a paid staff, it’s the local volunteer leaders that organize the many trips and activities we all enjoy. Volunteer leaders are members just like you, who have developed the necessary skills and experience to lead other members on winter ascents of high peaks, relaxing paddles on quite ponds or explorations to new and interesting places. Trips must often be planned months in advance so they can be posted in the Gazette. Overnight and out-of-state trips require even more planning and coordination (some facility reservations need to be made up to a year in advance), and come with the anxiety that a leader’s efforts will result in a full trip. However, leaders enjoy what they do and their rewards are many: meeting new people; spending time outdoors, sharing your joy in trying something new; discovering a special place; or looking back at a bridge or water bar that you just spent hours building. Most of all they appreciate a hand shake or a hug at the end of a trip and a heartfelt “thank you” for allowing us to share the experience.
Sometimes the role of leader also has its frustrations and members can help alleviate those issues with a little consideration:
- Sign up for trips early and don’t wait until the last minute.
- When you sign up for a trip/activity – show up or call, so others aren’t left waiting.
- Contact leaders only during the hours listed in the Gazette posting.
- Come to the trip/activity prepared and arrive at least 15 minutes early. If you’re not
- sure what to bring or wear - contact the leader.
Most important of all - volunteer to co-leader or become a trip leader. Our best leaders are often our most prolific leaders and that can become taxing over time. More leaders will allow us to offer more activities and will result in a more vibrant chapter. Our Club is only as good as the leaders who step forward to share their time, outdoor skills and experience.
Overall our trip leaders really enjoy their volunteer role in the Chapter, the people they met and the activities they share. They especially enjoy helping others to appreciate the outdoors be that a local hike, a technical climb, a bike ride or a conservation project. So as you review this issue of the Gazette, we encourage you to join us on the many trips and activities that have been planned for the next few months and when you do run into one of our leaders, just say thank you and I can assure you - you’ll get a warm smile in return...

Trails Committee News
Chapter members interested in helping prepare trails and bridges for summer hikes by brushing, blazing and painting please contact edelbarone@yahoo.com (508 922 2570), or Jennie Crooks at jbcrooks1@verizon.net (739-5497 before 10pm). Indicate days and times that you prefer to volunteer. No experience necessary.
The trails committee would like to ask your help by reporting any significant trail work/problems that you may find (during your hikes) which needs attention. Example: boards missing or broken on a boardwalk, big blow down across the trail, significant erosion, and heavy brushing. This will be primarily in the state management areas. Send reports to: Trails Chair Elise Delbarone at edelbarone@yahoo.com. Thank you very much for helping us with this important information.
Northern Hiking
Mountain hiking is best enjoyed when you are properly equipped and have the appropriate skills to safely travel from trail head to summit and back. Such know-how can be learned by participating in the activities offered by the Chapter’s Northern Hikes program. Throughout the year numerous trips and classes are conducted for beginner, intermediate, and experienced hikers. People, new to hiking, can greatly benefit from the Step-by-Step series of entry level trips and instruction. For more information contact Ed Poyer (edpoyer@gmail.com) or any of the mountain hike leaders.

Paddler Advisory
We are not offering our usual all day-all encompassing paddle safety program this year. We are only offering rescue trainings on weekday evenings – see write ups. We always recommend that our members join sister organizations such as RICKA which offers great paddling opportunities. Membership is only $15. Check them out at www.ricka.org. You may want to sign up for RICKA’s paddling class, but you must be a RICKA member. Many of our members already belong to RICKA,so you’ll always see familiar faces. The RICKA flatwater class is Sunday, June 14th. Learn the strokes and maneuvers that give you efficient control of your boat on flatwater. The 3-hour class will also cover basic rescue techniques. Even if you can’t make the class, you can always learn good paddling techniques paddling with them and discover places to paddle that we won't get to this year.
