Every
mountaineer knows the Eiger as a Swiss mountain steeped in legend
with stories of epics and deaths. In summer 2005, Brian
Phillips and Peter Barlow (co-chairs of our chapter’s technical
climbing committee), scaled the "Ogre" (English translation
of Eiger). After an initial attempt on the Northeast
Pillar that resulted in a freezing bivouac and an epic rappel, they
did summit on their second attempt via the Mittellegi route.
The slide show chronicles their adventures and provides information
on Swiss Alps mountaineering.
Peter has been tech climbing Chair
or Co-Chair for twenty seven years and has climbed rock and ice for
thirty years. He has taught literally hundreds of people
to climb safely in AMC classes.
Brian
has climbed rock and ice for sixteen years throughout the United
States and abroad.
