The Distinguished Service Award was established in 1976, the Centennial Year of the AMC and is presented annually to a member in recognition of outstanding contribution to the work of the club. The award is a symbol for all club members that we are an organization of volunteers working together in service to the public and for the preservation of our outdoor heritage. Nominations are accepted for individuals or couples who have been working in a volunteer capacity over many years in the service of the club. Previous award recipients are not eligible.

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) honored Ed Poyer of West Kingston with its Distinguished Service Award for 2016at the 140th AMC Annual Summit held January 30 in Norwood, MA. The award recognizes those AMC volunteers who have contributed outstanding efforts to the mission of the organization, for a sustained period of time, and at the very highest levels. This award recognizes long-term commitment to enhancing and sustaining the integrity of AMC's conservation, education and recreation mission.

Ed has been sharing his leadership talents with AMC since 1993, when he became a Narragansett trip leader. Soon thereafter, he began serving as the Narragansett Chapter Northern Hiking Committee Chair in 1994,a position he continues to manage today. He also chairs the Leadership Development Committee for Narragansett and has led or co-led three Adventure Travel trips to Yosemite and Colorado.

One of Poyer's most distinguished, and possibly unique, accomplishments as a leader for AMC is that he has led a winter hike to all 48 four-thousand footers in the White Mountains.

Poyer joined the AMC's Mountain Leadership School (MLS) instructor community in 1994 and has continued to serve as a field instructor for the past 21 years. He took over as MLS Director in 2011, most recently developing two new programs, MLS for Day Hike Leaders and Advanced Mountain Leadership School.
