GROUNDS FOR CELEBRATION
Bike Bits heard recently from Bill White, the driving force behind the new cyclists' campground in Twin Bridges, Montana. "The Twin Bridges Bicycle Campground was successful [this summer] in spite of the slow start due to weather," Bill wrote. "By my count, 245 folks stayed there and I'm sure I missed a few. The project has to be one of the highlights of my life. I met some wonderful people and am already looking forward to next year, when we will have the canoe livery up and running for those layover days. [The site lies alongside the sparkling Beaverhead River.] The Town Council turned from skeptical to firm believers. There was absolutely NO misuse of the facility by cyclists. Many actually requested cleaning supplies be stocked so they could clean the facility themselves! The donations were surprising. Only a few left nothing, and donations ranged from seventy-six cents to a hundred dollars. Merchants noticed an increase in sales to cyclists. What we have indicates that the camp was responsible for over $10,000 coming into the local economy. It sure was rewarding to see the skeptics 'eating crow' (grin)." Bill urges anyone interested in the prospect of establishing a similar facility in their community to contact him.
