spraying_5.jpg This was the other insect control device we used. It was a pulse jet (like the German V-1 rockets) which heated up an oil based insecticide (a Pyrethrin based compound)and ejected it as a vapor in the jet exhaust. What a fun gadget for a couple of engineers to play with. It would lay out a cloud bank of fog that we would use in the evening when there was no wind. It would drift through the brush and kill mainly mosquitos. But once we used it for fun and fogged the upper dorm hallway which is when this photo was taken. Another college prank on the kitchen girls by the handymen. It make a droning very loud buzz that I can still hear. It was started by pumping up the insecticide container, turning on a spark plug and pumping an air pump to force air through the reed valves. It burned gasoline for fuel, I think, maybe kerosene. The fuel would ignite and the jet would start. At th at point the spark plug was turned off and the fuel was adjusted for a good steady buzz and the insecticide was adjusted for a thick smoke. What fun. |
