short_tow_07.JPG When using a aluminum climbing carabiner, you must file off the hook on the end. Normally this hook improves the strength of the carabiner, but in this case it is a potential problem unhooking a rope from a deck line or other tow point. So file the hook down to prevent it from catching. If using the rope in saltwater, I soak the carabiners in fresh water to remove any salt in the joints after the paddle. This prevents the aluminum from corroding and locking up the spring hinge. Occasionally I put a drop of thin oil in each hinge point. |
