From the Chair

Our Chapter's Trails Committee was honored on May 4th at a festive event held by the Environment Council of RI. Twenty-three AMC members were present to receive the prestigious Senator John Chafee Award for outstanding conservation contributions to our state by preserving 60 miles of hiking trails through RI. Heartiest congratulations to our Trails Committee volunteers for all the work they have done for 85 years - and for all they do year-round to keep our trails safe and beautiful. May 19th is fast approaching - have you registered for the Spring Fling yet? This annual fun event gives us all a chance to meet, visit with friends, welcome new members, and share some great food! This year's presentation will be on Climbing! Hope to see you on May 19th. See you outdoors,

Spring Fling 2012

Come join us on Saturday May 19th for the Narragansett Chapters spring fling. This is a great opportunity to meet other members while participating in free activities during the day, enjoying a picnic dinner and relaxing while enjoying presentations. This year’s spring fling will be held on the Monastery grounds in Cumberland. Activities during the day will include hiking, biking, paddling and plant ID. It is open to new members, families and seasoned members alike. See registration and info.

Narragansett Chapter receives Award

The Chapter has received one of the 2012 John H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Awards from the Environment Council of Rhode Island. It was for the Trails Committee and volunteers who have been building trails and bridges in RI for 85 years.

Since 1927, AMC Trail Volunteers have been clearing fallen timber from trails, battling erosion, building walk ways over bogs, and bridges over rivers. Their primary work is in Arcadia Management Area and Burlingame State Park. Both scenic areas have numerous rivers and wet areas that require frequent repair and renewal due to water rot, flood damage or displacement. Severe storms have caused damaged and fallen trees, and bridges have been displaced or destroyed by flooding rivers. Volunteer hours invested in two recent events include; replacing bridges and boardwalks from the Spring flood of 2010: 175 hours, and clearing Hurricane Irene tree blow downs: 50 hours.

Tick Season is Here

As Spring returns to New England, the chance encounter with Lyme Disease returns. Those who have had the disease or still have it, will tell you...Don't takes chances! So what to do? Read up on methods of identification and prevention at the URI Tick Encounter Resource Center. What kind of insect repellant is best? DEET is the most commonly referred repellant for insects, but not the most effective for ticks. Many studies show that permethrin based products are better. Before you start reading, note that permethrin is highly toxic to cats. It is not to be used on the skin and is mostly used as a treatment for clothing. It kills ticks on contact whereas DEET does not. Several articles are worth looking over to give you a good overview of both (and others) types of repellants.

Trip Registration

A reminder on registering for all of our activities. All our trips (almost all) require attendees to register prior to attending. Register with the leader (L) of the activity to find the time and place of the activity, and any requirements as to experience and equipment needed. Some trips prefer you to register with (reg/w) someone other than the leader.

Some trips require a deposit for lodging, food, etc. Be sure to meet any deadlines for registration and payment. It causes our leaders severe headaches dealing with members who are late to decide they want to join a trip, but have not met their obligation to register and send in a deposit in a timely manner.
