More Leadership Training offered through outdoors.org.
As part of the current chapter initiative to recruit new leaders and find ways to retain existing leaders, I am reforming the Leadership Development Committee. To make this committee as broad-based as possible, I hope to include representatives from as many chapter subcommittees as possible. Since I am not aware of the talents and abilities of many folks other than Northern Hikes, I am seeking your help in recommending individuals who would be willing and able to help develop and train new leaders and provide assistance to existing leaders. The time commitment would be attendance at 2-3 meetings a year and possibly assisting with workshops. Presently, we run two workshops a year – Wilderness First Aid and Map & Compass, and I plan to run a Leadership Training Workshop this fall. With committee input and assistance, we hope to do more. Teaching opportunities are available, but not required.
Ideally, candidates should be experienced leaders who have shown the ability and willingness to mentor others or provide constructive advice on leadership issues. Mostly, I am looking for individuals who you think can help the chapter develop new leaders. So if you have any names you would like to suggest, please send them to me. Or, if you would rather talk to the individuals first and have them contact me directly, that would be OK.

A one day workshop to develop and practice important skills needed to successfully lead safe and enjoyable chapter activities. Sessions included Activity Design and Planning, Screening Participants, Leadership Styles, Decision Making, Trailhead Procedures, Managing Your Group, and Accident Scene Management. The skills presented apply to all chapter activities, and benefit anyone planning to lead a one day activity, a weekend trip, or maybe something more ambitious. Small groups were used to make the day highly interactive, giving the opportunity to benefit directly from the experiences and knowledge of the experienced chapter leaders who lead sessions. The Leadership Training instruction manual used can be read here.

All activity leaders should be aware of the various guidelines and forms that the AMC organization has provided for Chapters to use to promote safety and to be within the legal bounds and obligations of our organization. These are the categories that the leaders should be aware of. (All the referenced documents are in pdf format.)
Complete information can be obtained from the AMC Outdoors web site. Information that leaders should be aware of, is found in the following subjects.
This handbook should be read by all leaders that are involved in running trips and events. The goal of the handbook is to make all our leaders, better leaders for the benefit of our trips. There are many situations that our leaders may not be prepared for, and this manual will help prepare the leaders for unexpected events, as well as preparing them to be more effective leaders.
Leaders of outdoors activities must meet certain minimal requirements to be a leader. The overall Leadership Requirements and Guidelines for volunteer leaders should be read. Each committee, or activity, also has specific leadership requirements in addition to the general requirements. These can be found in the activity home pages which are listed under the drop down menu.
All activities such as biking, hiking, paddling, etc that involve risk must use the Volunteer Release Agreements form. It is to be read and signed by all participants of the activity, each time the activity is offered.
Any incidents or accidents that occur during an AMC activity should be reported, in addition to any other reports that may have to be filled in, eg. police, hospital, search and rescue, etc.
