No doubt most of you have heard of AMC's No Child Left Inside Initiative in which the club is trying to promote the importance of outdoor activity for young people. The Narragansett Chapter is actively looking for families to join our Family Outing Committee and I thought I'd offer some suggestions for activities you and your family can enjoy – outside. The Step-By-Step Program is meant to educate novice hikers in skills for hiking. Hikes start at the easier end of the scale, like this one, and gradually increase in difficulty as the summer passes. Additional hiking with other groups is recommended to further enhance cardiovascular fitness and muscle-building. With these tools under a hiker’s hip belt, the best areas of the glorious White Mountains are much more accessible and fun. Trip Report: Step By Step through the Blue Hills By Shannon Kelley. |
A great group of folks paddled the Ten Mile River in Pawtucket on Saturday May 23, led by Antoinette & Herrick. We met at the Pawtucket Country Club, where we left our boats and headed off for shuttle duty...The paddle starts with hardly any current, no wind and a wide berth along the edge of the golf course. Herrick led us past one lone swan who wandered around on the opposite side. The river twists and turns gently, becoming more forested and wild. A kayak tour around the Providence waterfront. Starting at the Bold Boint fishing access, we paddle up to Providence Waterplace Park and then back down the Providence River, along the Port of Providence to examine and try to identify all the industial facilities on the waterfront. We end up by Save the Bay for lunch and continue as far south as Pautuxet Cove. We then cross the Bay and view the natural and unnatural features as we paddle back to the launch point. An interesting paddle, different from others. The full photo set is in the Photo Album. By Mike Krabach |
The Boston Chapter's Mountains & Music weekend serves as a gathering for musicians, both amateur and semi-professional, to get together and perform. The music involves chamber music, choral, and orchestral performances. This spring the event was on Cape Cod at the Cape Cod Sea Camps facilities. Beside informal chamber music gathering, a Saturday evening concert provided entertainment for all members. This article reports the experience of a non-performer. By Mike Krabach |
Three AMC members escape the winter and head south to kayak in Florida. Exploring the most southern coast of Florida in the Everglades National Park at the Flamingo campgrounds. Leaving on a snowy Sunday morning and in just two days have 80 degree weather. This was not an official major excursion but felt like one. By Mike Krabach |
On August 22, my daughters (8 and 10) summited their first “4,000’er” by hiking to the top of NH’s Mt. Jackson. Reaching the summit marked the achievement of an open ended goal my older daughter set a year ago after we discussed some of the hikes I had recently completed. Upon looking at the topographical map in the lobby of the AMC’s Highland Center, she said, “my first 4,000’er is going to be Mt. Jackson”. Two hours later, when I pointed out Mt. Jackson from the summit of Mt. Willard, nearly 2,000’ feet below Jackson’s summit, she visibly paled and re-considered her decision. We talked about it and agreed that it didn’t have to be done any time soon and that it was an excellent goal to have. By Matt Putnam |
With the weather going from heavy rain on Friday night to summer temperatures on Saturday, AMC members and guests enjoyed another weekend at the Cardigan Lodge in NH. Hikes to Mt. Cardigan with grand views (the clouds cleared on Saturday)and Orange Mountain were the order of the day. Kayaking on Newfound Lake was a windless summer day without any boats. The meals were served family style and were excellent. Breakfasts were of the same quality and in quantities beyond just filling you up. Saturday evening events included an astronomy viewing (along with a slide show on Saturday morning), a pumpkin carving, and contra dancing. Sunday was a partial day with ad hoc hikes to the mountains and to Welton Falls. If you missed this years weekend, start thinking about attending next years event. By Matt Putnam and Mike Krabach |
