GUIDELINES FOR ACTIVITY LEADERS OF THE TECHNICAL CLIMBING
SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE NARRAGANSETT CHAPTER,
APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN CLUB
ACTIVITIES
- An activity of the Technical Climbing Sub-Committee, Narragansett Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club, is a trip or other event, which is open to members of the AMC and their guests.
- Technical Climbing Sub-Committee activities shall be approved in advance by one of the Sub-chairs.
- Technical Climbing Sub-Committee activities shall be published in the Chapter newsletter, Gansett Gazette, and/or the national magazine AMC Outdoors.
- Activity Leaders shall submit a written description of proposed activities to the Technical Climbing Sub-Chair for approval. The Sub- Chair shall forward approved activity descriptions to the newsletter editor for publication.
- Activities to be listed as an Inter-Chapter Activity in the Excursions section of AMC Outdoors require advance approval of the Chapter Chair.
- Technical Climbing Sub-Committee activities shall be led by at least one Trip Leader qualified by the Chapter for that activity.
- Technical Climbing Sub-Committee activities presented jointly with another AMC Chapter or non-AMC organization shall be led by at least one Narragansett Chapter Activity Leader qualified by Narragansett Chapter for that activity.
- Activity participants under eighteen years of age shall be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult unless prior consent has been given by the Activity Leader. The accompanying adult is responsible for the actions of the minor.
- Activity Leaders may charge an activity fee to recover expenses incurred in providing an activity.
- Activity Leaders may petition for Chapter funds to cover advance deposits under circumstances where participant fees may not be practical. Such petitions shall be directed to the Technical Climbing Sub-Chair in accordance with the Chapter's Standing Rules.
QUALIFICATION OF ACTIVITY LEADERS
- Activity Leaders of the Technical Climbing Sub-Committee shall meet and maintain the following criteria:
- Activity Leaders must be members in good standing of the Narragansett Chapter.
- Activity Leaders must be at least eighteen years old.
- The overall AMC Leadership Requirements and Guidelines will apply to all our leaders.
ACTIVITY LEADER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Activity Leaders and/or Co-Leaders shall screen all prospective participants of activities. The primary purpose of screening is to determine the suitability of the participant to the activity. During the screening process, participants shall be advised of risks and their responsibility for their own safety and welfare.
- For climbing activities, Activity Leaders shall solicit climb leaders and determine the maximum number of seconds which each climb leader is prepared to take on the rope. The total capacity of this solicitation will determine the number of seconds permitted on the climbing activity.
- Activity Leaders shall secure signed copies of the Technical Climbing Release from each activity participant at the first meeting point.
- Activity Leaders shall secure any required use permits for an activity.
- Activity Leaders shall maintain a record of activity participants including name, address, and phone number. This record shall be available during and after the activity.
- In the event of an accident, lost participant, or other incident of similar or serious nature, the Activity Leader shall immediately report such incident to the Office of the Executive Director, AMC, and the Chapter Chair.
- This report shall include:
- The names, addresses, and phone numbers of the principals involved in the incident.
- The location, time, and date of the incident.
- A description of the incident.
- A description of any damages.
- If a vehicle accident, description of the vehicles involved, license plate numbers, driver license numbers, and insurance companies.
- If medical attention is required, the name of the medical center and the name(s) of care provider(s).
- In the event of an incident as described above, or any other circumstance which could lead to litigation or inquiries by the media, the Leader shall immediately report such incident to the Office of The Executive Director, AMC, and the Chapter Chair. The Leader shall refer any inquiries to the Executive Director and the Chapter Chair for official statements. Further, the Activity Leader shall avoid giving statements formally or informally at the scene of the incident.
