We are the Narragansett Chapter
The Appalachian Mountain Club, founded in 1876, is America's oldest conservation and recreation organization. With more than 100,000 members, advocates, and supporters in the Northeast and beyond, the nonprofit AMC promotes the protection, enjoyment, and stewardship of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. The AMC supports natural resource conservation while encouraging responsible recreation, based on the philosophy that successful, long-term conservation depends upon first-hand enjoyment of the natural environment. The 12 chapters reach from Maine to Washington D.C. The Narragansett Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club is the local Rhode Island affiliate. Our Chapter was formed in 1921 and has about 2,500 members.
AMC's Mission Statement
The Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment and stewardship of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region. We believe that mountains, forests, and waters have intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunities, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. Because successful conservation depends on active engagement with the outdoors, we encourage people to experience, learn about, appreciate, and understand the natural world. What our Chapter Offers
We encourage non-active members and potential members to explore the advantages our Chapter offers.
- The Narragansett Chapter offers people in Rhode Island the chance to participate in the AMC's Mission Statement.
- We offer recreational and public service opportunities for people who share these principles and values. Our chapter offers biking, paddling, local walks, hiking, backpacking, camping, cross country skiing, technical climbing for the recreational enthusiast. Our events include all levels of skill and ability.
- For those who would like to contribute to the environment, we offer many events and activities through our conservation committee. For those who wish to contribute to the maintenance of the hiking trails in Rhode Island we have our trails committee.
- Throughout the year we also offer social and special events for members and non-members. These activities offer the opportunity for people to meet others who enjoy the same recreational and social activities in Rhode Island.
- People who would not ordinarily try a recreational sport on their own, find it easier to become acquainted with a new activity through our Chapter. A large portion of our membership have started as beginners in their activity of choice. Members describe our activities as more social than competitive.
- Our trips are led by volunteers who share their time and experience to provide you opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty and challenge of the outdoors. Without this volunteerism, the club would not exist. Our Chapter offers members to contribute to this leadership.
