Sat April 9 Arcadia Trail Project
Our first trails project of 2005 included the placement of stepping stones in a very wet portion of the Trail, as well as the digging of a few drainage channels. The weather was perfect for playing in the mud! After the rock work, we continued with brushing on the John B. Hudson Trail. Trails members checked on the trail following a heavy rain and reported evidence of proper draining of water from the area.

Sat April 16 Carter Preserve Trail Needs Spring TuneUp
(Trails/Conservation) Nature Conservancy developed this trail in Charlestown with help from AMC in 2003. Today we placed four 19 foot water bars on a slope to control erosion. The pictures show the trail crew hauling a freshly cut tree, removing the bark, and placing the water bar in its intended location.
Brushing and Blazing Tuesday Nights in May
A small crew met on Tuesday nights for blazing and brushing in Arcadia Management Area. In May, we completed the River, Hudson, and Shelter Trails. We will be continued the work throughout the summer.
Sat June 4 - National trails Project at the Tri-Pond Trail in Wakefield
This year, our National Trails Day project was the replacement of several bog bridges with boardwalks in a swampy area of the Tri-Pond Trail in Wakefield. Twenty-five volunteers worked a total of 112 hours to build 9 boardwalks. This project was especially challenging since the entire area was very muddy with a lot of sections actually under water. A special thanks to Maria Earley and Chris Shafer for the great job they did organizing this very successful project.
The Trails Committee would like to thank the following Wakefield businesses for their generous food and drink donations: Belmont Market, Shaws, Tim Horton's, and the Pumphouse.
Sat June 18 Ben Utter Trail Project
A group of people replaced a small foot bridge on the Ben Utter trail. After the bridge was completed, the team removed a blowdown from the Ben Utter trail and completed the brushing and blazing.
Sat Sept 9 Annual Trails Work Day at Burlingame State Park
Two projects were completed today by a group of hard working volunteers. The first project was the construction of a 17 foot bridge over a muddy area. The second project was to construct a rock turnpike. A rock turnpike is an elevated walkway that spans a muddy wet area. Large stones are first laid on the ground, with smaller stones sandwiched in the cracks between the large stones. The final step is to put a layer of soil on top of the stones. The result is a nice walking surface. A special thanks to Shirley Cummings for taking the pictures.
Trail Sign Project
This year, the trails committee installed 28 trail marker signs, mounted on 8 foot posts. 6 smaller signs were also placed. These signs were installed near the trail heads throughout Arcadia Management Area. This project took most of the summer complete. We wish to thank DEM for making the signs.
Sat Nov 12 Tri-Ponds Bridge Project
Our final project of the year was the building of three sections of boardwalk over a stream at the Tri-Pond trail in Peacedale, Rhode Island. Twenty-nine volunteers spent a total of 163 hours working on this project.
